Terms that are constantly confused.
PatinaBasic copper carbonates. Form over years under moisture and carbon dioxide, reproduced under control in the workshop. Adhere firmly and protect the metal. In German: Patina.
VerdigrisCopper acetate, formed by acetic acid. Toxic, practically never occurs on buildings. Constantly confused with patina. In German: Grünspan.
Oxide layerThe first, dark layer that forms on copper in air. Precedes the green carbonate layer.
BrowningA dark conversion layer produced out of the metal itself, mainly on brass and steel. In German: Brünieren.
Passive layerAn invisible chromium oxide layer on stainless steel. The reason it does not rust: scratch it and it re-forms by itself.
Galvanic corrosionTwo different metals in contact with moisture form a cell. The less noble metal erodes. Relevant for copper against aluminium, zinc and galvanised steel.
Pre-patinatedSheet that arrives green from the mill. Not the same as a surface patinated to a chosen tone.
Satin finishA fine directional grinding of the surface before finishing. Changes how the light is reflected.
